Commercial Manager – Mining

The small-cap nature of this setting means that this role will be both a ‘doer’ and a manager. This would well suit if you are a commercial manager for a mining contractor looking to step onto the principal/client side of the fence. Alternatively, you might be at a tier two or three miner, have built systems and a got things to a steady state and be looking for your next challenge as the business pushes for nameplate production.

There is a small, skilled team in place (2 x Snr CAs and a support), and you will report to a personable Head of. Having stepped up from this role, they are there as a strategic sounding board and to get you bedded into the role. Described as personable and action orientated, they fully intend your role to be highly autonomous.

You will therefore be self-driven and able to take ownership of contracts, procurement arrangements and strategies on a range of projects (millions through to billions). Included in this will be taking ownership of an airstrip project valued in the billions. Take a long-term outlook; 25 yr + LOM.

Key deliverables

  • Effective stakeholder management; managing contractor relationships, as well as a range of internal players. The MD leads from the front when it comes to relationship building and is keen to see this replicated across all levels.
  • Managing the above-mentioned commercial team to get the most of out their abilities.
  • Manage and negotiate a tranche of procurement agreements ranging in value, complexity and risk-profile.
  • Contribute towards development, improvement and implementation of systems to ensure the ongoing success of the commercial business unit.
  • Provide necessary commercial data, forecasts (costs, variations, and revenue) and guidance to senior management to ensure alignment with the company’s longer-term strategy.

Logistics

While Perth based, it is expected that you will visit the WA-based project roughly every four to six weeks. You may wish to visit more regularly at first while building relationships. The CBD office has a small, friendly team that you’ll quickly feel welcomed to.

About you

The ideal candidate will have proven experience driving the commercial, contracts and procurement function of a mining contractor or miner. You will bring a relevant tertiary qualification, and have a genuine desire to be a part of being a part of the success of this growing business.
