Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Mining Engineer to take a leading role in open pit planning, design, and production support at their Pilbara operation. This is a key technical position responsible for optimizing ore extraction, guiding the engineering team, and ensuring safe, efficient mining activities.

About the Role

In this position, you will oversee all aspects of open pit mine planning, including pit design, cost modelling, scheduling, and production reporting. You will manage and mentor Mining Engineers, coordinate closely with operational teams, and provide technical leadership to support the site’s long-term mining strategy. You will also act as the alternate Quarry Manager during periods when the Mining Technical Services Manager is off site.

Key Responsibilities

Mine Planning & Design

  • Conduct pit optimization and related cost modelling to support strategic planning.
  • Prepare and review open pit designs, including waste dumps, haul roads and ROM stockpiles.
  • Develop mine development sequencing, and short-to-medium-term scheduling.
  • Maintain systems for daily dig, drill and blast planning, production data capture and reporting.
  • Monitor conformance to plan and provide corrective recommendations.
  • Review drill and blast designs, tie-ins, and blasting effectiveness.

Operational Support

  • Assist in implementing annual mine schedules in collaboration with operations and the mining contractor.
  • Support daily oversight of mining contractor activities during manager absences.
  • Ensure pit dewatering is conducted effectively and groundwater monitoring is maintained.
  • Lead and participate in daily planning meetings.
  • Maintain robust systems for reconciliation, production monitoring, and stockpile management.
  • Support implementation of ground control and pit wall inspection programs.

Team Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and develop Mining Engineers.
  • Review work completed by engineering staff and external consultants.
  • Identify training needs and support capability development within the team.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Cost & Environmental Management

  • Assist with budgeting, expenditure control, and contractor cost reviews.
  • Provide input on best-practice mining methods, scheduling, and design decisions.
  • Support environmental compliance and contribute to responsible management of the resource and life-of-mine planning.

About You 

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • 5–10+ years’ experience in open pit operations with exposure to team management
  • Proficiency with Alastri is essential (competent – expert level)
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • Demonstrated leadership capability
  • WA C-Class driver’s licence
  • Current First Aid competency

Desirable:

  • WA Unrestricted Quarry Manager’s Certificate
  • Experience in hard rock/pegmatite mining
  • Exposure to optimization software and building technical systems/procedures
